Alberta Construction 2016 Top Project Award Winners

DIALOG is proud to be a part of four unique projects awarded Top Projects by Alberta Construction Magazine. The awards celebrate the best of design, sustainability and innovative technologies in Alberta. Covering all corners of the province, the winners stood out for overcoming uncommon challenges and delivering meaningful projects that Albertans will enjoy for decades to come.

Thank you to Alberta Construction Magazine and congratulations to our project collaborators on these exciting awards!

Commercial (under $50 million) & People’s Choice Award: Banff Gondola Upper Terminal Renovations

The Banff Gondola Upper Terminal is built on no ordinary construction site. There were just two ways to move materials to its location on top of Sulphur Mountain: helicopter or gondola. Working with the strict weight limits imposed by both methods, the project team would ultimately ship 200 cubic metres of concrete and 130 tons of steel up the mountain—and bring down another 312 tons of concrete, 149 tons of steel and 79 tons of debris.

Commercial (over $50 million): International Facilities Project at YYC International Airport

With a workforce that averaged 1,600 people at times, YYC Calgary International Airport’s new international terminal stands as one of the largest commercial projects in Alberta history. To minimize disruptions to airport activity, the construction team adopted strict safety and security protocols and carefully planned out work schedules and project logistics. The simplicity of the unique aluminum formwork system used for the project provided further gains for productivity.

Institutional (over $50 million) & Institutional Design (tie): Royal Alberta Museum

This technologically advanced and architecturally sophisticated facility—the largest museum in western Canada—will showcase the province’s natural and human history in the heart of downtown Edmonton’s burgeoning arts district. An integrated design approach and extensive use of building information modelling were crucial to creating the project’s most complex features, which include a massive concrete feature staircase and perforated metal cladding panels. Alberta’s history has moved into the 21st century with the new Royal Alberta Museum.

Project of the Year & Commercial Design: Rogers Place

Clad in stainless steel and filled with natural light, Rogers Place offers a welcome alternative to the imposing concrete arenas of old. The Top Projects judges lauded the facility—the first Canadian NHL arena built to LEED Silver standards— as one of the most significant sports complex construction projects ever undertaken in North America. Easily one of the most scrutinized projects in Edmonton history, Rogers Place required detailed preconstruction planning and close collaboration among the project team to meet its schedule and budget.
