Planning for sustainability: the University of Calgary West Campus experience

The aspiration of sustainability appears straight-forward in theory, yet often proves to be intricately devilishly in practice. This is especially true when tackling a neighbourhood scale, with multiple stakeholders. The presenters, representing an integrated design and development team, will use the recent precedent of the West Campus in Calgary, to walk through specific, tangible opportunities for sustainable practices at the city-building scale. Discussion will include establishing appropriate green strategies for an entire campus, within technical and financial feasibility; exploring best-practice planning principles that can optimize sustainable design; innovative use of modeling tools; and, the development of sustainability targets and benchmarks across scales.
