Belvedere Transit Centre opens in Edmonton
The new Belvedere Transit Centre opened to transit riders this month in Edmonton! The new building and surrounding plaza replaces a 35-year old existing centre, giving Edmonton transit users a safe, comfortable place to wait for their bus. Located right beside the Belvedere LRT Station, the new transit centre includes public heated and unheated waiting areas, a security office, operator washrooms, service rooms and a kiosk.
“Transit centres are a critical part of the fabric that connects Edmontonians to their city and to each other. We’ve collaborated with many stakeholders to create integrated, barrier-free designs that allow more Edmontonians to safely access the transit system.”
-Eddie Robar, Branch Manager, Edmonton Transit Service
The design of the transit centre takes its cue from the roof line of the existing LRT building. Full glazing on the front and both sides allows views in and out—patrons can see their bus, and safety is increased inside the centre. Multiple points of entry give users a range of options to access the centre or exit toward their bus. The interior of the transit centre includes an exposed roof structure, similar to the nearby LRT building, with an inset wood clad ceiling. The warm wood softens the experience for travelers. Public art entitled Plantanos, the sculptures by Michelle Campos Castillo, are bundles of plantains evoking the diversity of the community.
The site design responds to the existing paths of travel of transit patrons, and grading around the project site is improved, including access to the adjacent LRT Centre. Planting beds line walkways with incorporated bench seating. A row of canopy trees provide shade in the plaza and help mitigate the prevailing northwest winter winds. Flexible open space is available on the west end of the plaza to allow for casual programming such as food trucks, market stalls, information kiosks or small performances.
The City of Edmonton is investing to upgrade existing infrastructure of 21 transit centres, 17 LRT stations and two LRT tunnels as part of their Transit Centre Revitalization Project. DIALOG is proud to play a role in many of those projects, and it’s exciting to see people enjoying the new centre in Belvedere!
