DIALOG Project Wins Net-Zero Energy-Ready Challenge
DIALOG’s 2150 Keith Drive office building project in Vancouver was recently selected as one of 11 winners of a juried competition that promotes the design and construction of energy-efficient buildings in BC. The project will receive approximately $150,000 in construction incentive funding as a successful finalist in the Province of British Columbia’s Better Buildings BC: Net-Zero Energy-Ready Challenge.
In a media release, the provincial government noted, “The Net-Zero Energy-Ready Challenge (NZERC) is one of many CleanBC programs aimed at making buildings all over the province less polluting, more comfortable and energy-efficient. Net-zero energy-ready buildings are designed and built to be so efficient that they could meet all or most of their own energy consumption requirements with renewable energy technologies.”
NZERC is a joint effort from the Province of BC and Integral Group, an international green building engineering firm, that supports and celebrates the design and construction of multi-family residential, commercial, and institutional buildings that target either the top step of the BC Energy Step Code or the Passive House standard. Better Buildings BC is part of the province’s CleanBC initiative, which is intended to reduce pollution and promote clean and renewable energy in BC.
In January 2019, 2150 Keith Dr. was awarded $30,000 in initial funding as part of the design incentive portion of the NZERC. DIALOG was then asked to submit a more detailed application for the construction incentive portion of the competition and was again successful – this time securing approximately $150,000 in additional funding in early July 2019.
The project sets a new standard for high-performance office buildings by incorporating energy-conserving measures with a mass timber structure and open, day-lit spaces. Net-zero energy-ready performance will be achieved using high-efficiency heat recovery ventilation (85% recovery efficiency), air source heat pump heating and cooling, and high-performance windows. Keith Dr. has an EUI target of 82 kWh/m2/yr (80% below baseline), and is targeting LEED® Platinum certification.
DIALOG and the other NZERC winners will showcase their designs and share design best practices at an open house event later this year.
The team has had lofty sustainability goals for 2150 Keith Dr. since the project was conceived, and DIALOG worked diligently with AME Group (mechanical consultants) and EXP (envelope consultants) to achieve the AIA 2030 carbon neutral target for this building. The NZERC funding is an important acknowledgement of the team’s efforts to set new benchmarks for energy-efficient designs.
