Transit = Health + Happiness, DIALOG says ‘Yes’

As designers committed to community health + happiness, we know the critical importance of public transit. It’s an essential part of bringing urban landscapes to life and to enabling economic and social growth. We’ve spent decades shaping many of Metro Vancouver’s greatest places – and now we’re lending our voices to the “YES” campaign on the Metro Vancouver Transit Referendum.

In a region expecting to assimilate more than 1 million people in coming years Vancouver needs a sophisticated, ongoing commitment to responsible transit infrastructure. The plan put forward by the Mayor’s Council will ensure that Vancouver keeps and attracts the most talented individuals and companies. That it provides safer transportation options with less commuting time and that carefully navigate carbon emissions. It includes major new projects such as the Broadway subway, Surrey-Langley light rail, and a new Pattullo Bridge. This is in addition to key additions and upgrades to bus services, B-Line routes, existing Skytrain lines, Seabus, HandyDART, West Coast Express, the Major Road Network, and bike lanes. And it will undoubtedly make all of our lives and our cities better.

“More transit use will translate into proportionally less driving by residents, resulting in fewer deadly crashes and a drop in the 680 Metro deaths per year attributable to air pollution,” Dr. Patricia Daly, Chief Medical Health Officer for Vancouver Coastal Health recently told the Surrey Leader. She adds that Metro Vancouverites who take transit are 27 per cent less likely to be overweight or obese than drivers. That gap becomes an even wider 45 per cent for people who mainly walk or bike instead of driving.

If we do not build the necessary transit and transportation infrastructure in Vancouver, it will affect the quality of our air, weaken our economy and deteriorate our physical and mental health. The Mayor’s Council determined that the .5% increase in PST is the cheapest, most equitable funding option for this plan. DIALOG is convinced that this is an investment needed in the region. And while it’s hard to vote yes to a tax increase, we have to vote “YES” and encourage you to do the same.
