DIALOG’s Green Team Receives Architect at Zero’s Award of Merit
Nexus From Up Top
Architect at Zero called for entrants to plan and design a theoretical student housing site-map for San Francisco State University.
This is DIALOG’S second project to win accolades in the net-zero arena in 2016 – GROWHouse was celebrated with two awards earlier this year – A net zero mixed-use development design for Seattle. WA.
DIALOG’s futuristic and thoroughly thoughtful design for SFSU received the Award of Merit, the highest achievement of Architecture at Zero’s professional category, outshining 62 entries from all over the world. The winning entry, ‘NEXUS’, demonstrates the mutual benefits when architecture considers the complex climate and social systems of a place and its people. It succeeded in following a net positive approach to design by generating electricity with solar pv, wind, and domestic hot water heating with aerobic compost digestion.
A zero output of energy is no small feat and in DIALOG fashion, from genesis to completion, the design was a team effort; with collaboration between architecture, urban planning, and mechanical engineering. The building’s serpentine massing was one of 27 design iterations generated during the exploration phase. A process requiring two software programs: Sefaira and Ladybug. Together they allowed DIALOG’s Green Team to gain intricate feedback on energy performance at various stages of design. Chosen for its balance of energy performance and communal shared spaces, the massing met the initial holistic approach and intended requirements: South-East orientated shared spaces with large windows to collect solar gains for passive heating.
DIALOG’s Green Team has been challenging themselves with net-zero competitions as a means to increase capacity and master new software that optimizes structural energy efficiency. Their learnings are being integrated into existing projects nationwide.
Now is the time to build clean… DIALOG’s horizon radiates with an elevated wave of intelligent sustainable design. Nexus is proof of the brilliance to come.
