Exploring Rail Deck Park with Charles H Best Middle School
The grade 7 & 8 students attending a summer program at Charles H Best Middle School in North York have been working on a very special project: creating their own visions for Rail Deck Park, the project currently being explored by the City of Toronto.
Principal Marc Mullan invited DIALOG planners, architects, and engineers, to critique the student’s ideas in the form of plans and models, after he heard about DIALOG’s Carleton Studio. Master plans for Rail Deck Park were developed by 15 grad students from Carleton’s Azrieli School of Architecture & Urban Design under the guidance of DIALOG’s mentors earlier this year.
Our visit to Charles H. Best provided an opportunity to teach the students about all the different disciplines required for such an ambitious project. DIALOG’s Steve Sestic, Gail Shillingford, and Tracy Lee met with each group of students, and had lively discussions about the student’s work. Not surprisingly, their designs centred on the act of play – a refreshing perspective for our team.
Overall, we were very impressed by the enthusiasm and ambitious designs the students produced. It was lovely to spend the day with such passionate young city-builders. We hope some of you are inspired to become tomorrow’s future architects, urban planners, landscape architects, structural, mechanical and electrical engineers, and sustainability experts. If you do, we hope you’ll consider joining DIALOG’s multi-disciplinary team!
Great work everyone!! We hope you’ll invite us to visit Charles H Best again soon.
