Green Stamp of Approval for Calgary’s University District!
The West Campus Development Trust (WCDT) launched a process to undertake the development of a Detailed Master Plan for the University of Calgary’s, 271 acre University District, carrying forward key principles and ideas that were generated from an extensive consultation and design process. The WCDT retained DIALOG as lead consultant to move the University of Calgary’s, University District project from the Master Plan Vision through to Detailed Master Plan and ultimately Land Use and Outline Plan approvals with the City of Calgary.
The University District Master Plan will have a transformative impact on Calgary’s future. This will be the city’s first step towards addressing anticipated population growth in a mixed-use community with a variety of housing typologies. Calgary’s population is forecast to grow by over 28% before 2025, to over 1.9 million people. The city needs to chart a new direction forward, away from sprawling developments of single family homes. The Plan addresses this challenge by creating a compact, walkable, community, with diverse and inclusive housing typologies and open spaces, various community and destination oriented services, and a mix of commercial and employment uses. Central to the success of this project was a highly collaborative working relationship between the West Campus Development Trust, DIALOG, EXP, IBI, and D.A.Watt — a team dedicated to the vision of Calgary’s next great community; a human-scale neighbourhood that defines a healthy, active, and vibrant lifestyle for all ages.
