Evoke DIALOG – The YWCA Cause We Care House

Not all glass and mountains, Vancouver has a systemic problem: affordable housing. While a ‘Missing Middle’ struggle to find affordable housing throughout Greater Vancouver, the most vulnerable groups are struggling to make ends meet in one of the City’s oldest areas: East Vancouver.

This space, infamous for being home to The City’s less fortunate, is often a shock to visitors of the supposedly ‘Most Livable City’.

Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside community is in need of love and attentive devotion.

Underneath its derelict veil is a colourful community of families who call the neighbourhoods of East Vancouver home, and are committed to its betterment. The economic pressures of living in one of the most expensive cities in the world has many of these families living in dangerous environments.

In an integrated effort to find a unique solution and enhance the Downtown Eastside with civic services and affordable housing, The City of Vancouver, the Vancouver Public Library and YWCA Metro Vancouver worked with DIALOG to provide an inclusive gathering space and safe housing for single mothers and their children.

The first city building to be named in Musquem, The nə́c’aʔmat ct (We are one) Strathcona Public Library welcomes a diverse population. It serves the immediate community and entices neighbouring populations to visit the Downtown Eastside.

Atop the library is the YWCA’s Cause We Care House, a facility that offers single mothers a safe, supportive environment designed to alleviate economic and social pressures for some of the most disadvantaged families in Vancouver. This is only one small solution to elevating the experience of a culturally rich neighbourhood. Many more people need homes, and DIALOG wants to design them.
