Inside Out

For over 50 years the Glenbow Museum has been a repository of Western Canadian history. As the museum evolves to become more art-focused, the design of the space needs to follow. Our design reimagines the Glenbow as a world-class art experience, opening up the building to the cultural core of Calgary.

Exposing art to the city...

The design philosophy turns the museum inside out to create a higher degree of transparency from the outside to the interior spaces of the museum. The architecture will engage the city by creating inviting spaces where the art is visible from the street.

...and the city to art

The new Glenbow will be transformed into an urban, social gathering space in the heart of downtown. A new double-height, light-filled lobby occupying the entire ground floor serves as a community living room. It will offers guests access to a restaurant, retail spaces, a flexible theatre, a black box gallery, education spaces and, of course, art.

Through the looking glass

The +15 bridge has been reimagined to connect the Glenbow to Arts Commons. The bridge will slide straight through Glenbow like a sword, simultaneously offering views into the new theatre and the lobby. A new theatre space uses the city as backdrop, and will offer a stage for performers in the city.
