This eight-floor transformation for a global consulting firm’s Vancouver headquarters floods the space with natural light, future-proofs the company for growth, and offers a visual representation of the brand’s evolution.
- A Global Leader With a View
This company’s pre-existing space, although dated, dark and no longer representative of their current identity, had incredible views of the city. These views weren’t accessible to all. Like many corporate entities, an employee’s role with the firm determines whether they work in a private office or an open-office workstation. Recently, the company’s global protocol adapted with new flattened hierarchies. This shift meant designers could provide access to natural daylight and views to all employees by placing workstations, open collaboration hubs, and coffee rooms along the perimeter of each floor by centralizing private phone rooms and closed collaborative working areas.
- Workplace Strategy
The design promotes a dynamic space that encourages employees to engage with the entire office. Workstations have sit-stand desks, large meeting rooms unfold into open, inviting environments, and there are collaborative rooms for group projects. All enclosed rooms are built with DIRTT demountable walls to accommodate for growth. This allows the company the opportunity to make growth changes in a cost-effective and non-disruptive way.
- Listen, Then Draw
DIALOG engaged with employees from many departments and roles within the company to determine what the new space needed to achieve. The strongest idea that emerged through this collaborative process was that although the firm is a large global company, the Vancouver office is unique within the organization. Employees wanted a space that announced their local identity. As one employee explained, “Our office should reflect our own city to set us apart.” DIALOG drew inspiration from the office’s view: Vancouver’s urban context, the ocean and mountains. These elements are represented in the Vancouver office as a Pacific North West journey: beginning in the basin of the city, driving up the windy and inspiring Sea to Sky highway, and reaching a pinnacle destination in the mountains.
- A Vibrant Corporation
The company’s logo is also a strong identifying factor throughout the space. The layers of the logo represent the core values of the firm. To highlight these values, the colours of the layered logo were used as floor identifiers and for wayfinding throughout the office floors. They also define collaborative areas. This has made the space vibrant and representative of the team’s playful culture. DIALOG worked with the company’s art curator, Christina Hirukawa, to select the various pieces of artwork within the new design concept.
