Grande Prairie Regional Health Centre
A new health and learning centre takes shape on the banks of a river
The Grande Prairie Regional Health Centre provides services including in-patient units with a 200-bed capacity, outpatient ambulatory care, emergency, diagnostics, ambulatory care, obstetrics, surgery, pediatrics, acute geriatrics, mental health and intensive care. The new facility also includes a regional cancer centre and the integration of a Health Training Centre, which supports the Grande Prairie Regional College.
- Key Components
The structure is organized into four main components: the diagnostic and treatment block, the in-patient unit wings, the Education Administration block, and the main service and circulation spine.
In-Patient Units fan out in three Y shaped wings. These wings are connected at the ends to the adjacent IPUs. The shape was adopted based on the site and provides fast connections between units while maximizing patient views from the bedrooms to Bear Creek.
- Critical Care
The Diagnostic and Treatment block contains the major acute and critical care components of the hospital. On level 1, the main entrance, registration, and the auditorium are at the north end, while the Emergency and D.I. components are at the south end near the entrance to the site and adjacent to the helipad. Level 2 contains the ICU, Cardiac Diagnostics, Site Administration, Allied Health and Foundation offices. Level 3 contains the Day Surgery, Pre Op Holding, Surgical Suites and Post Anesthesia Recovery.
- Educational Connection
The Education Administration block consists of ambulatory clinics on the main floor, and the Grande Prairie Regional College education component on levels 2 and 3. This block is distinct, yet tied to the rest of the Diagnostic and Treatment block. The second floor is devoted to classrooms and teaching labs.
