On the Mark

A new rural Community Health Centre creates a convenient “one-stop-shop” for health care needs, and also acts as a “Hub of Hospitals” for surrounding towns.

Markdale, Ontario

Vital to the Community

Markdale Hospital serves a vital role in a wide variety of inpatient, outpatient and emergency services to individuals of all ages in central Ontario. The hospital’s catchment area includes the townships of Grey Highlands, West Grey, Southgate and Chatsworth - totalling approximately 22,000 people. The catchment has the highest percentage of residents over 65 in Ontario, and the third highest percentage in Canada.

A New Vision for Healthcare

MOHLTC approved Markdale Hospital’s request for the development of a new Community Health Centre (CHC). Historically, rural towns in Ontario each had their own hospital, but with the opportunity to create a new vision, Grey Bruce Health Services and Markdale CHC developed a new Rural Health Centre model which collocates and integrates primary care services with acute, hospital-based services.

Leading the Way

DIALOG was chosen to lead the consultant team through the Master Plan / Business Case phase, as well as the design and construction phases. DIALOG developed a Master Plan that reflects the vision of Grey Bruce Health Services, Markdale CHC, and the community. The plan met the immediate requirements of the hospital, and was sensitive to a complex network of political interests, but also responded to the need for future flexibility and growth of a rural community within the context of a regional healthcare system.

Designing a Better Patient Experience

The new design increases spacial requirements for emergency, outpatient ambulatory services, diagnostic services, and surgery. The design also includes a coffee shop, staff lounge, meditation room, community gathering spaces, and considers: viewpoints for staff to increase safety as staff numbers are low in rural areas; natural lighting in areas where staff and visitors will be spending significant amounts of time; and modular-design for potential future expansion of the hospital. The materials for the exterior will be reminiscent of the surrounding rural community.
