Vancouver’s Evergreen Line Stations
The Evergreen Line
The Evergreen Line is a new rapid transit line that connects Coquitlam to Vancouver via Port Moody and Burnaby. The project includes 11 km of guideway with 7 new stations. DIALOG with SNC Lavalin lead the design and construction documentation of two elevated stations of the Line at Lougheed Station and Lafarge Lake‐Douglas College Station.
- The project
The project distilled the inherited design down to the core functional requirements, optimizing the transit operations and passenger experience. Detailed materials were used to provide functional yet inviting transit stations.
- People movement
The planning and design of the urban core LRT stations put pedestrian movement as a high priority in the functional and aesthetic design of the stations. The optimized footprints and compact design of the stations at grade are efficiently organized to respect required setbacks and impact on the neighbouring sites and environment. At each station, integration of cyclist pathways, bike parking and bus transit stop placement were key considerations. As part of the user experience, the design of the station followed guidelines to ensure the passenger safety and security, simple and intuitive way-finding through maintaining direct sight lines and optimization of natural light penetration at the entrances. This set of criteria formed the basis of a simplified design approach meant to connect a consistent language of architectural expression across the entire line of stations and stops.
- Economic opportunity
Retail opportunities were also studied and integrated into the designs to intensify land use and promote a more vibrant mixed‐use environment within the neighbourhoods and communities the stations were designed to support.
