The Kaye Edmonton Clinic charted new territory in the field of ambulatory care, teaching, and service delivery. A unique collaboration with Alberta Health Services and the University of Alberta, the vision was to create a state-of-the-art facility for patient and learning-centered care. DIALOG provided programming and master planning services, interior design in public spaces, base building, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering and structural engineering in collaboration with partners. Kaye Edmonton Clinic brings together diagnostic imaging, a collection lab, surgical and transplant clinics, a sports medicine clinic, and Stollery Children’s Hospital clinical services.

Unique to Alberta, the nine-storey building centralizes multi-disciplinary teams that provide specialized ambulatory care. It accommodates 80 clinics under one roof.
A separate and distinct patient arrival zone at the front door provides intuitive pedestrian and vehicular access.
A focus on accessibility means proximity to all types of transportation. The building is also designed and oriented for improved safety and functionality.
Universal Design principles were adopted, resulting in intuitive wayfinding and interactive signage providing up-to-date information that’s easily accessed.
A design highlight is a curving, eight-storey atrium bringing natural light deep inside the clinic.
Plentiful green spaces were designed to connect the surrounding areas of the clinic, integrating native grasses and species; naturalized areas that promote healing and wellbeing.
The Team
The most prominent building feature is the curving, eight-storey glazed atrium wall. An open volume of over 10,000 cubic metres behind the atrium wall provides the public with views of southeast Edmonton and allows natural light to penetrate deep into the building. To create the open atrium space, the wall spans from the third level to the roof, a height of nearly 30 metres. The structural system is light and elegant in appearance, integrating the mechanical systems that are used to provide heating and cooling.
The Kaye Edmonton Clinic achieves top marks in sustainable design with water efficient plumbing features and energy efficient lighting controlled by occupant sensors. The high performance building envelope includes improved glazing and insulation, radiant floor heating and cooling, and external shading on the south-exposed curtain wall.
The Clinic is exceptional for its integration of university faculties, medical disciplines, education, research, and patient care.
