Lougheed Building

Urban Renewal

Mixed-Use, Office & Workplace, Renewal

New balconies and bridges reclaim the previously inaccessible historic lightwell, create a sense of community across office floors, and are built with the capacity for stair connections for future multi-floor tenants.

As Calgary flourished over the last century into one of Canada’s largest cities, the Lougheed Building earned its longstanding reputation for housing some of Alberta’s most important political and business empires.

The historic Lougheed Building has long-awaited a new vision to renovate and restore its grandeur as one of Calgary’s preeminent spaces for the most creative and forward-thinking business ventures. DIALOG’s vision for the Lougheed Building respects the past while looking to the future and reviving the building’s spirit for the next 100 years.

The heritage value of the Lougheed Building lies in key exterior elements such as the Chicago Style design, ground level large display windows and recessed store entrances.

The entrance foyer features original plaster and marble details and opens into a new modern lobby and lounge area with access to a glass elevator.

Technology, advertising, media and information (TAMI) start ups will feel at home in the contemporary and collaborative office spaces set within a unique heritage shell.

The new lobby offers a ‘third space’ for building tenants – a communal area for gathering, meeting and working that connects to a corner café.

The health and wellbeing of occupants is paramount and must be served at all levels – fresh air, quality of light, and variety of spaces to support diverse work styles – including a historic penthouse tenant lounge.

Tenant spaces are flexible and adaptable. Building amenities are diverse in scale and offering, and common areas foster a sense of community.

The sunny rooftop patio accessible to all building tenants offers a unique perspective of the downtown Calgary skyline.

After using the new basement gym, multi-purpose fitness area, or bike parking room, tenants can take advantage of the large changeroom and showers.

The open hoistway glass elevator was carefully inserted into a historic lightwell to allow efficient access to the office floors and previously unserved penthouse and rooftop patio, while minimizing impact to protected heritage elements.

New balconies and bridges reclaim the previously inaccessible historic lightwell, create a sense of community across office floors, and are built with the capacity for stair connections for future multi-floor tenants.

The Team

Lougheed Building Reimagined Urban Renewal

Character-defining elements of the Lougheed Building include its L-shaped form, deep lightwells and brick and sandstone cladding.

Through surgical-like interventions and the recuperation of lost spaces, the Lougheed Building is re-imagined as one-of-a-kind hub for ideation.
