Three DIALOG Projects Recognized at 2021 AFBC Architectural Awards of Excellence

November 4, 2021

We’re thrilled to share the Architecture Foundation of British Columbia (AFBC) has revealed the winners of the 2021 Architectural Awards and three of our projects have been recognized with an Award of Excellence in three different award categories!

The AFBC Architectural Awards of Excellence is a project-based awards program that celebrates the very best in architecture and design from the British Columbia architecture community.

The Awards (including the Lieutenant-Governor of British Columbia Awards in Architecture), represent the highest level of architectural award in B.C. and aim to recognize design excellence for projects across the province. Project entries are judged based on several criteria – theory and design, program and client, context and site, budget and time constraints, sustainability, and on how well it reflects excellence in architectural design and practice.

Equity Award

nə́c̓aʔmat ct Strathcona Library / YWCA Cause We Care House

The first major civic building in the city of Vancouver to have an official aboriginal name, the nə́c̓aʔmat ct Strathcona Library / YWCA Cause We Care House project pairs an 11,000 sq. ft. public library with a 21-unit social housing complex for single mothers and their children. The design of the building enhances Vancouver’s Downtown East Side and provides an inclusive space for all.

The Equity Award recognizes projects that create positive social change through high ideals and ethical standards, social inclusion and promotion of human health, well-being and resiliency.

Design Excellence Award

The Shipyards

The Shipyards is a distinctively North Vancouver mixed-use development on the Lonsdale waterfront that combines community, dining, retail and hospitality in an open concept design. The site is both a monument to the past and a nod to the historic Wallace Shipyards, which today boasts an unparalleled public realm that completes a series of interconnected plazas, transit routes and recreational spaces.

The Design Excellence Award recognizes projects that enhance the built environment, the experience of space and place, and reflect high standards of design quality, vision and skill.

Lieutenant-Governor of British Columbia Award

Vancouver House

Vancouver House is the iconic 59-storey residential, commercial and urban realm structure that sits at one of the main gateways to downtown Vancouver. The project’s super-innovative tower with a dynamic form unfolds from a mixed-use urban village under the Granville Bridge that provides Vancouverites with spaces for working, shopping and leisure and ample opportunity for different uses and public events.

The prestigious 2021 Lieutenant-Governor of British Columbia Award recognizes excellence in completed architectural projects designed by AIBC members. Lead design architects associated with winning projects are honoured for their exceptional accomplishments in architecture and design.
